Delhi Government Introduces Mandatory Aadhaar Identification for Electricity Subsidy Claims

Delhi electricity consumers will have to provide Aadhaar details to receive power subsidies under a new requirement announced by the state government, as per a Business Standard news report.
The Power Department notification makes proof of Aadhaar possession a condition for receiving the benefit. The order refers to Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act, 2016.
Consumers must submit their Aadhaar number through the government's web portal, or another method notified by the authorities.
Consumers Can Apply Using Enrolment ID
Those who have not enrolled for Aadhaar in Delhi will need to apply and submit the required information. The notification allows them to provide their 14-digit Aadhaar Enrolment ID number when seeking the subsidy.
The scheme operates through 5 distribution agencies: BSES Rajdhani Power Limited, BSES Yamuna Power Limited, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited, New Delhi Municipal Council and Military Engineer Services.
Each agency handles the scheme in its designated area.
Subsidy Claims Rise to 5.5 Million
Delhi's power subsidy covers monthly electricity consumption of up to 200 units, which is provided free of cost. Consumers using between 201 and 400 units receive a 50% subsidy, subject to a monthly limit of ₹800.
In 2024-25, 5.23 million domestic consumers received the benefit, representing around 84% of the 7.3 million consumers recorded in official data. In 2025-26, the number rose to 5.5 million, or 87%.
The city's total power consumer base has expanded by nearly 40% over the past decade and now exceeds 7.3 million.
Subsidy Allocation Crosses ₹4,000 Crore
The Delhi government's allocation for power subsidies stood at ₹4,037.63 crore by February 2026. For the 2026-27 financial year, the government has earmarked ₹3,500 crore for the scheme.
The notification says Aadhaar will be used to verify beneficiaries' identities. The government has stated that the system is intended to simplify identity verification and reduce the need to submit multiple documents to access subsidies.
