Government Plans BS-VII Emission Norms From 2029 With Stricter Pollution Checks

India is preparing for another shift in vehicle emission standards, with Bharat Stage VII (BS-VII) norms proposed to come into effect in phases from April 2029 to April 2035. The new rules are expected to cover cars, SUVs, commercial vehicles and buses, according to a report by The Times of India.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the proposed schedule, while draft notifications for three vehicle categories are expected to follow, the report said.
BS-VII Rollout to Begin with Cars and SUVs
New cars and SUVs would come under the proposed standards from April 2029. Small goods vehicles and pick-up vans are scheduled for 2030, followed by buses and heavy-duty vehicles from April 2031. The timeline for two-wheelers is yet to be announced.
The phased approach is expected to give vehicle manufacturers and testing agencies time to prepare for the changes.
Smaller Particles and On-Road Emissions Under Focus
One proposed change is a reduction in the particle-number measurement threshold for cars and SUVs from 23 nanometres to 10 nanometres.
This would allow smaller particles to be counted. The report also says several emission limits for cars and SUVs will remain unchanged from BS-VI.
The proposed standards aim to cut emissions across pollutants by around 20-50%, with a larger impact expected on trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles.
Brake and Tyre Emissions Also Included
The new framework would extend beyond exhaust emissions to cover particles released through brake wear and tyre abrasion.
Vehicles would also be checked under actual driving conditions, with independent agencies carrying out surveillance on vehicles already in use.
Existing vehicles, including those meeting BS-VI standards, would not be affected retrospectively or have their permitted lifespan changed.

Conclusion
The proposed BS-VII standards would bring tighter checks on vehicle emissions, including particles released outside the exhaust system. The final requirements and timelines will depend on the notification of the rules.
