Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) continues to lead innovation in the energy sector with significant strides in its Digital Energy Solutions (DES) business. Recently, L&T DES secured mandates to implement advanced energy management systems in South India and expand its grid modernization portfolio in the United States. These developments are part of L&T’s broader strategy to leverage digital solutions for efficient energy management and grid modernization.
L&T DES has been tasked with implementing Energy Management Systems (EMS) across Southern India, including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana. The project will cover both main and backup systems for the Southern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (RLDC) and State Load Dispatch Centers (SLDC). The implementation is focused on ensuring zero downtime during upgrades and will integrate advanced applications for real-time monitoring and control of the energy flow across the transmission network.
Another noteworthy achievement for L&T DES is its new mandate to upgrade power and transmission control rooms in the Western United States. The complex project involves deploying advanced applications to manage energy flows in real-time and enhance grid reliability. This includes integrating 15 Energy Management System (EMS) hosts and implementing situational awareness tools to assist grid operators.
L&T DES is not limited to India and the USA but is actively involved in several grid modernization projects globally. In India, the company is upgrading National and Regional Transmission Asset Management Centers, integrating over 270 substations nationwide. In the Middle East, L&T is contributing to the modernization of grid infrastructure through advanced Solar Power Plant Controllers (PPCTM).
L&T’s focus on renewable energy integration is evident through its Hybrid Energy Management and Control System (HECSTM), which manages renewable hybrid plants with combined solar and storage capacities. The recent commissioning of the 700 MW ArRass solar plant in Saudi Arabia showcases L&T’s technological prowess in implementing reliable grid operations.
In Puerto Rico, L&T has been awarded a contract to implement hybrid renewable substation controls—marking a first-of-its-kind initiative that fully integrates solar, energy storage, and supervisory control within a single platform.
L&T DES’s expertise also extends into consulting, with ongoing projects for the California Energy Commission and the USA Department of Energy. These projects aim to build resilient, sustainable communities through bi-directional EV charging and rapid utility interconnections, paving the way for an electrified future. The Hybrid Energy Network Operation Center (HENOC) in California will spearhead a 300 MW solar project providing Balancing Authority (BA) services—another testimony to L&T’s leadership in energy transition.
