Bank Holiday on June 26, 2026: RBI Clarifies Muharram Closure Schedule Across States

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clarified that banks will operate normally on June 25 in most states, while the Muharram holiday will be observed on June 26 in several banking centres across the country.
The clarification comes after confusion regarding holiday dates, particularly in Kerala, where the state government revised the holiday schedule.
Banks to Remain Closed on June 26
According to the RBI's holiday calendar, bank branches in several states and major cities will remain closed on June 26 to mark Muharram.
Customers planning branch visits for banking services should complete their work before the holiday to avoid inconvenience.
3-Day Closure in Many Areas
For many customers, the Muharram holiday will be followed by the fourth Saturday on June 27 and Sunday on June 28.
As a result, bank branches in affected regions will remain closed for 3 consecutive days.
This may impact services that require physical branch visits, including:
- Account opening and KYC updates
- Loan processing and documentation
- Signature verification
- Cheque-related services
- Other branch-based transactions
Kerala Revises Holiday Date
Initially, Kerala had declared June 25 as the Muharram holiday. However, following moon-sighting announcements and discussions with community organisations, the state government shifted the holiday to June 26.
The revised date aligns with the observance of Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, and brings Kerala's banking holiday schedule in line with the RBI's calendar.
Digital Banking Services Will Continue
While bank branches may remain closed, digital banking services will function without interruption.
Customers can continue using:
- UPI services
- Internet banking
- Mobile banking applications
- ATM withdrawals and deposits
- Digital fund transfers
These services will remain available throughout the holiday period.

Other Upcoming Regional Bank Holidays
Apart from Muharram, some regions will observe additional local holidays later in the month, including:
- Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti on June 29 in Shimla
- Remna Ni on June 30 in Aizawl
These holidays may affect banking operations in specific locations.
Conclusion
The RBI has confirmed that banks will function normally on June 25, while Muharram-related closures will be observed on June 26 in several states.
