BSE Share Price in Focus; Partners with MMTC-PAMP to Expand EGR Market

BSE Ltd has signed an agreement with MMTC-PAMP India Private Ltd to expand the electronic gold receipts (EGR) market in India.
As per news reports, the agreement, announced on Thursday, covers market development, investor participation, and the conversion of physical gold into electronic receipts.
The companies will also work on stakeholder engagement and knowledge-sharing initiatives. The arrangement includes the conversion and redemption of EGRs, subject to regulatory requirements.
Existing EGR Trading on BSE
Electronic gold receipts are securities regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Each receipt represents physical gold held in designated vaults. Investors can hold and trade these securities in dematerialised form through their demat accounts.
BSE was the first Indian stock exchange to introduce EGR trading. Its platform currently offers trading units of 100 milligrams, 1 gram, and 10 grams, with gold fineness levels of 999 and 995.
Under the agreement, BSE will facilitate the launch of EGR contracts in multiple denominations. The proposed expansion is intended to give investors more options for trading gold through the exchange.
MMTC-PAMP to Handle Bullion Processes
MMTC-PAMP will contribute its experience in gold refining, assaying, storage, delivery, and EGR creation and redemption. The company is India's only gold and silver refiner accredited by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).
These processes are necessary to link physical bullion held in vaults with receipts traded on the exchange. The partnership will focus on improving the movement between physical gold and electronic holdings while meeting regulatory requirements.
Focus on Domestic Gold Market
BSE Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sundararaman Ramamurthy said the agreement aims to improve accessibility, increase liquidity and encourage the financialisation and recycling of domestic gold.
India is among the world's largest consumers and holders of gold. Expanding regulated trading could help bring more transactions into the formal market and improve price transparency.
Mobilising domestically held gold is also part of the broader policy effort to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen India's role in global bullion trading.
