Vikram Solar’s new solar cell plant in Gangaikondan, Tamil Nadu, remains on schedule to start production in December 2026. The facility is designed for 9 GW of N-type TOPCon solar cells.

The company plans to bring the full capacity online in phases after production begins. The project is a key step in its plan to manufacture more of the components used in its solar modules.

From Solar Modules to Cells

Solar cells are a major part of a panel, and Vikram Solar says the new plant will help reduce its reliance on imported cells. Once operating at full capacity, it is expected to supply cells for most of the company’s module production.

The site already has a 6 GW module plant, inaugurated in August 2026. Vikram Solar also plans to expand the cell facility’s capacity to 12 GW.

More Manufacturing Planned at the Site

The company’s longer-term plan includes a 9 GW ingot and wafer facility, which has board approval and is targeted for FY29. If completed, the integrated campus will bring ingots, wafers, cells and modules together at one location.

The nearly 200-acre site is expected to support more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, according to the company.
