In 2024, Ayurveda Day falls on October 29, and this year’s theme is “Ayurveda Innovation for Global Health” focuses on fostering Ayurvedic innovation to address global health issues. The Indian government has been actively promoting Ayurveda through various schemes and programs. The National AYUSH Mission, which was launched in 2014, continues to be a significant initiative aimed at strengthening the healthcare delivery system in the country by promoting traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurveda.
On October 28, 2024, the Government of India stated that to mark Dhanvantari Jayanti and the 9th Ayurveda Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate several health sector projects valued at over ₹12,850 crore, underscoring India’s dedication to promoting Ayurveda in conjunction with accessible healthcare.
A significant aspect of this initiative is the expansion of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) with the opening of Phase-II, which features a specialised Panchakarma hospital, an Ayurvedic pharmacy, a sports medicine unit, a central library, an IT and startup incubation centre, and a 500-seat auditorium.
Recognising Ayurveda’s potential to complement modern medicine, PM Modi will also launch four Ayush Centres of Excellence. These centres aim to enhance Ayurveda’s contribution to addressing contemporary health challenges and promoting sustainable healthcare solutions. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation for two Central Research Institutes in Yoga and Naturopathy in Khordha, Odisha, and Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
The initiatives target key areas such as combating non-communicable diseases (NCDs), addressing climate change challenges, and promoting preventive health and holistic wellness. Ayurveda Day 2024 will emphasise women’s health, workplace wellness, school wellness programs, and food innovation, showcasing Ayurveda’s relevance in today’s healthcare landscape.
