Britannia Industries informed the exchanges that Britannia Bel Foods, a leading player in the Indian cheese industry, has achieved a significant milestone nearly two years after establishing its joint venture with Bel Group. The company has inaugurated a state-of-the-art cheese factory in Maharashtra, marking a key step in its commitment to producing premium-quality cheese for Indian consumers. This factory will manufacture Britannia The Laughing Cow products locally, highlighting the company’s dedication to serving high-quality, locally sourced products.
The new cheese factory is located within Britannia’s dairy food park in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra, a state recognised for its leadership in milk production and its well-integrated dairy ecosystem. This strategic location allows Britannia Bel Foods to harness local resources and support the development of the regional dairy industry.
Britannia Bel Foods has established a robust milk procurement program, sourcing approximately 4 lakh litres of 100% cow’s milk daily from over 3,000 farmers in Pune and the surrounding areas. The company has scaled this program significantly, installing 70 village-level Bulk Milk Coolers within a 100 km radius of the factory, covering 10 tehsils in Pune and nearby districts. This initiative ensures a sustainable supply chain while supporting local farmers, reflecting Britannia’s commitment to community development and agricultural sustainability. The milk collected undergoes rigorous quality checks across 31 parameters on-site, and 20 additional parameters before being processed at the factory.
The factory, constructed with an investment of ₹220 crores, features five production lines with a total capacity of 6,000 tons per year for natural cheese varieties such as cheddar and mozzarella and 10,000 tons for processed cheese. The facility employs cutting-edge technology, including advanced pasteurisers, bactofuge units, and auto-standardisation systems. This ensures the production of cheese that meets the highest global standards for safety and quality.
Cheddar, mozzarella, and processed cheeses are produced using world-class equipment sourced from leading global manufacturers. This modern technology, combined with Britannia’s strict adherence to food safety protocols, enables the company to deliver premium cheese products that consistently meet consumer expectations.
At the launch event, Varun Berry, Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Britannia Industries emphasised the company’s dedication to supporting local milk farmers and promoting sustainable dairy practices. He noted that the Ranjangaon facility is strategically positioned to further Britannia’s goal of producing high-quality, locally sourced dairy products.
Cécile Béliot, CEO of Bel Group, expressed pride in the partnership with Britannia and the opening of the new factory, which leverages Bel’s 160-year legacy in cheese production. She highlighted the company’s commitment to providing accessible, nutritious products tailored to local preferences.
With this new facility, Britannia Bel Foods is poised to expand its presence in the Indian cheese market and offer consumers an unmatched cheese experience.
