Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE), a leading name in Indian shipbuilding, has further solidified its export prowess by signing a contract for the construction and delivery of the fifth 7,500 DWT Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV). This milestone follows an earlier agreement for the construction of four additional MPVs, and it highlights GRSE’s growing presence in the international market.
GRSE signed a significant agreement with M/s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG, Germany, for the construction of the 5th MPV of 7,500 DWT. This vessel is part of an overall order of eight ships, with an approximate total order value of USD 108 million. Each MPV is designed for optimal versatility and cargo handling, including bulk, general, and project cargo, making them highly capable of supporting global transportation needs.
The MPVs, 120 meters long and 17 meters wide, have been specifically engineered to carry multiple large windmill blades on deck, which adds a unique capability for renewable energy transportation. These vessels can handle up to 7,500 metric tonnes of cargo, with a focus on both flexibility and efficiency.
GRSE’s latest contract signifies a major step towards expanding its influence in the international maritime industry. By maintaining rigorous quality standards and enhancing capabilities, GRSE is now well-positioned to meet the global demand for high-quality shipbuilding services. This commitment is reflected in its ability to attract major international clients such as M/s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co., Germany.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. is not new to undertaking projects of this magnitude. Founded in 1884 and acquired by the Government of India in 1960, GRSE has established itself as a premier warship building company under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence. Over the years, GRSE has expanded its capabilities, delivering over 790 platforms, including 109 warships for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. This achievement makes GRSE the largest warship builder in India in terms of platforms delivered.
Their engineering division is also known for its significant contributions, including the production of deck machinery items, pre-fabricated portable steel bridges, and marine pumps. GRSE’s consistent excellence has earned it several accolades, such as the Raksha Mantri Award in 2022 for designing the most silent ship for the Indian Navy, as well as the title of Best Performing Defence Shipyard of India for four consecutive years.
This latest contract with M/s Carsten Rehder is a testament to GRSE’s robust growth and expansion strategy in the international market. By building these MPVs, GRSE not only enhances its reputation as a capable and efficient shipyard but also contributes significantly to the “Make in India” initiative by expanding its footprint in global exports. The shipyard’s ability to concurrently construct 24 ships at a time, along with its adoption of modern infrastructure and technology, ensures that it is ready to handle a growing number of domestic and international orders.
GRSE’s motto, “In Pursuit of Excellence and Quality in Shipbuilding,” is evident in its continuous strides in infrastructure, technology, and shipbuilding expertise. With each new milestone, GRSE reiterates its commitment to quality, customer satisfaction, and building a stronger maritime future for India.
