On October 24, 2024, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) announced the opening of its Passive Safety Lab and Battery & Cell Research Lab, designed for engineers to test the safety of SUV products under various load conditions and conduct research on cell technologies. The labs were inaugurated by Dr TRB Rajaa, Honorable Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion & Commerce of the Tamil Nadu Government, along with Mr Velusamy R, President of Automotive Technology & Product Development at M&M Ltd and Joint Managing Director of Mahindra Electric Automobile Limited, as well as senior officials from the Tamil Nadu Government.
The Passive Safety Lab is one of the largest automotive passive safety test facilities owned by an OEM globally, capable of conducting assessments according to the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP) and the Australian and European New Car Assessment Programs (A/ENCAP).
The Battery & Cell Research Lab will focus on the research and analysis of battery cells, modules, and packs, aiming to enhance energy efficiency, performance, charging speed, and longevity. This lab represents a significant milestone for M&M in its commitment to clean mobility solutions, enabling both destructive and non-destructive cell testing to be conducted in-house.
Located just 55 km from the Mahindra Research Valley (MRV), where all Mahindra SUVs are developed, these state-of-the-art facilities in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu—famous for its magnificent temples and exquisite silk—add new landmarks to the city. M&M has invested over Rs. 300 crores in the Passive Safety Lab and Advanced Cell Research Laboratory & Battery Proto Build Shop.
