SJVN Limited, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE), has taken a significant step in enhancing Maharashtra’s energy infrastructure by signing 2 landmark Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Government of Maharashtra.
The agreements were formalised in Mumbai in the presence of Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister, Sh. Devendra Fadnavis is geared towards the development of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) and Floating Solar Projects (FSPs) in the state.
The first MoU signed between SJVN and the Department of Water Resources, Government of Maharashtra, focuses on the development of five Pumped Storage Projects with a combined capacity of 8,100 MW. The signing was conducted by Sh. Sushil Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN, alongside Sh. Deepak Kapoor (IAS), Additional Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department. This initiative underscores the commitment to leveraging hydroelectric power for sustainable energy production in Maharashtra.
The second MoU involves collaboration between SJVN and Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (MAHAGENCO) for a 505 MW Floating Solar Project at Lower Wardha Dam. This agreement was also signed by Sh. Sushil Sharma and Dr. P. Anbalagan (IAS), CMD of MAHAGENCO. The Floating Solar Project will be developed in two phases: the first phase will involve 100 MW, while the second phase will encompass 405 MW. This phased approach is designed to optimise existing power evacuation infrastructure and provide a reliable energy source for the region.
The planned Pumped Storage Projects include major facilities such as the 800 MW Kolmondapada, 1,500 MW Sidgarh, 2,000 MW Chornai, 1,800 MW Baitarni, and 2,000 MW Jalvara projects. The MoUs will enable SJVN to carry out necessary surveys, investigations, and the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to facilitate the timely establishment of these projects, in alignment with current central and state government policies and schemes. The PSPs are expected to play a crucial role in energy storage, grid stabilisation, and meeting peak electricity demands, thereby ensuring the delivery of reliable and clean energy to Maharashtra.
The total estimated investment for these ambitious projects is ~₹48,000 crore, which is expected to generate around 8,400 direct and indirect employment opportunities. Furthermore, these initiatives will support eco-tourism and skill development programs, providing substantial benefits to local communities. The Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra expressed congratulations to SJVN, MAHAGENCO, and the Water Resource Department for achieving this milestone and assured full government support for the timely execution of the projects. This collaboration is set to mark a new chapter in Maharashtra’s energy journey, aligning with the state’s commitment to sustainable and innovative energy solutions.
