Introduction

Welspun Enterprises Limited (WEL), a key player in infrastructure development, has recently secured a significant contract from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the design and construction of a tertiary treated water conveyance tunnel. This project marks a major milestone in WEL’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and its growing presence in the water sector.

Project Overview

WEL has been awarded a Rs 1,989.40 crore contract for an 8.48 km-long water conveyance tunnel that will transport treated wastewater from the Dharavi Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) to the Ghatkopar WWTF. Utilizing advanced tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology, this project is set to be completed over 93 months, significantly contributing to Mumbai’s water management system.

Strengthened Order Book

The outstanding order book of WEL as of June 30, 2024, stood at Rs 12,300 crore on a standalone basis. With the addition of this new project, the order book has expanded to approximately Rs 14,300 crore (post-Q2 FY25 execution). Notably, Rs 9,900 crore is from the water sector, including Rs 4,400 crore in operations & maintenance and asset replacement projects, Rs 1,989 crore from the newly added tunnel segment, and Rs 2,400 crore from the transportation sector. Furthermore, the company is awaiting a decision on a road project bid worth Rs 1,900 crore, for which it is currently the lowest bidder (L1).

Welspun’s Focus on Sustainability

WEL’s new contract reflects its focus on sustainable infrastructure development. These projects aim to reuse treated wastewater, thus contributing to a circular economy. Mr. BK Goenka, Chairman of Welspun World, emphasized that these initiatives align with the company’s objectives of fostering growth while supporting green infrastructure.

Conclusion

Welspun Enterprises continues to solidify its leadership in the water and infrastructure sectors with large-scale projects like the BMC contract. With a robust and growing order book and a focus on eco-friendly solutions, WEL is poised to play a vital role in India’s sustainable development initiatives.
