Introduction

Every year on February 4th, World Cancer Day is observed as a way to promote prevention, increase awareness, and strengthen bonds with cancer patients. As a fintech firm dedicated to our client’s welfare, Angel One believes it is essential to discuss the role health insurance plays in the battle against cancer.

World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day originated from the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), a global consortium dedicated to uniting the world against cancer. In 2000, the UICC proposed the idea of World Cancer Day to raise awareness on a global scale, and the first official observance took place on February 4, 2006.

The purpose of the day is to help dispel misconceptions about cancer, support early identification, and advocate for preventive actions. In an attempt to lessen the worldwide burden of cancer through campaigning, education, and research, it brings together people, organisations, and governments.

Significance Of Health Insurance In The Battle Against Cancer

Cancer not only takes a toll on physical health but also poses significant financial challenges. Medical treatments, surgeries, and associated costs can be overwhelming, leading to a financial burden that adds to the already complex emotional and physical struggles. This is where the importance of insurance comes to the forefront:

  • Financial Protection: Insurance provides a safety net by offering financial coverage for medical expenses related to cancer diagnosis and treatment. With the rising costs of healthcare, having comprehensive health insurance can alleviate the financial strain on individuals and families.
  • Access to Quality Healthcare: Adequate insurance ensures access to the best medical care and treatments available. It allows cancer patients to focus on their recovery without the constant worry about the financial implications of their healthcare journey.
  • Critical Illness Coverage: Some insurance policies offer critical illness coverage specifically designed to address major health challenges like cancer. In the event of a cancer diagnosis, the policyholder receives a lump sum amount, providing flexibility in covering various expenses associated with the illness.

Things To Consider Before Opting For Health Insurance

  • Coverage Needs: You should evaluate healthcare needs, including potential future needs. Consider factors such as age, pre-existing conditions, family size, and any specific medical requirements.
  • Type of Health Insurance Plan: Understand the various kinds of health insurance policies, including Point of Service (POS), Exclusive Provider Organisation (EPO), Preferred Provider Organisation (PPO), and Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO). Select a plan based on your interests and medical requirements.
  • Network of Healthcare Providers: Always check the network of doctors, hospitals, and specialists included in the insurance plan. Ensure that your preferred healthcare providers are part of the network to minimise out-of-network costs.
  • Pre-Existing Conditions: Understand how pre-existing conditions are covered. Some plans may have waiting periods or exclusions for certain conditions, so be sure to check the policy details.

Interim Budget 2024: Initiatives To Curb Cervical Cancer

Globally, about 8.8 million people die from cancer each year; if left unchecked, the number of

deaths will increase to 13.2 million per year by 2030. The 5 most frequent cancers in India

are breast cancer, cervical cancer, oral cancer, lung and colorectal cancer. The government has taken numerous initiatives mentioned below:

  • The Indian government declared in February 2018 that Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs) would be established nationwide for screening of cancer.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which was introduced in 2018, has made cancer treatment one of its main areas of attention in order to protect the beneficiaries from the potentially disastrous costs of cancer treatment.
  • Despite being mostly avoidable, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in India and causes approximately one-fourth of all cancer-related deaths worldwide. “CERVAVAC,” India’s first domestically produced vaccine, is now available to prevent cervical cancer.
  • Other initiatives for increasing public awareness about cancer and for the promotion of a healthy lifestyle include observation of National Cancer Awareness Day & World Cancer Day and the use of print, electronic and social media for continued community awareness.

Conclusion

World Cancer Day is a global effort to raise awareness, dispel misconceptions, and strengthen the fight against cancer. Cancer not only affects physical health but also brings financial challenges. Insurance provides a safety net by covering medical expenses, ensuring access to quality healthcare, and offering critical illness coverage. The Indian government has taken significant steps to curb cancer, focusing on prevention, screening, and treatment.
